It is important that consumers' protect and insure their homes, since homes are most consumers' largest investments. Many people believe that they have adequately insured their homes by purchasing and maintaining homeowners' insurance. This is only partially true. Homeowners' insurance only protects the home and its contents in certain situations, generally not including natural disasters that are expected in the area. For example, if a homeowner in Florida has a home destroyed due to a hurricane, it is very unlikely that the homeowners' insurance policy will cover the damages because hurricanes are an expected occurrence in much of Florida.

It is important that homeowners have the proper insurance coverage on their homes to avoid finding themselves in situations where they believe that they are protected, only to find that when disaster strikes and they have lost their homes, their insurance company says that it was due to a natural disaster that is expected in their geographical location. It is advised that homeowners discuss potential situations that the primary homeowners' insurance policy would not cover with their insurance agents. The agents should be able to go over what the policies will and will not cover online games. At that point it is important that the homeowners consider the risks associated with the conditions that their primary homeowners' insurance policies do not cover.

In many cases it is beneficial for homeowners to look into purchasing specific insurance policies to protect them against natural disasters that are considered to be common in their areas. For instance, homeowners living on the tropical coasts may find it to be extremely beneficial to have hurricane insurance. Homeowners living in the wooded part of California may wish to obtain fire insurance, and those living along the San Andreas fault line may wish to purchase earthquake insurance.
